Walking

Whether you are an experienced hill walker or prefer a more leisurely stroll in beautiful surroundings Dumfries and Galloway has everything to offer. The nearby Galloway Forest, the Galloway hills and stunning cliff top coastal walks are rarely busy and offer routes for all abilities. The southern Upland Way crosses through our area, and the newly created Rhinns of Galloway coastal path links with the existing Mull of Galloway Trail to create an 83 mile circular route.

Wigtown is definitely the place for you! Home since 1998 to Scotlands national Book Town, and the following year to the now iconic Wigtown Book Festival, one of the UKs best loved literary events. With around 16 bookshops and even one that you can come and run yourself for a week!

Eating Out

There are a range of places to eat throughout Dumfries and Galloway that serve seafood landed at our coastal villages and local farm produce. Whether you just want a coffee and a good book, a quality dining out experience for that special occasion or something between you will find it here. Its also home to a number of distilleries producing whisky and gin, and micro breweries.

Wildlife

Stay with us and watch the wildlife on the doorstep! Badgers visit and can be seen on the lawn at dusk, red kites and buzzards soar overhead. Deer cross the fields….. and the road! our resident bats, of which we have 4 species, perform flypasts and keep the midges under control. For the most enthusiastic ornithologist or those who just enjoy watching wildlife, there’s loads to see. Go further afield and follow the red kite trail, visit the ospreys at Threave Castle and the RSPB reserves at Moss of Cree, Mersehead and Caerlavarock.

Cycling

Cycling is a great way to explore this part of Southern Scotland. Whether you just want an easy bike ride on paved surfaces or a challenging mountain bike ride, theres something for everyone! Explore the National Cycle Network or try out the seven world class mountain biking trails at 7stanes with locations at Galloway forest park, Dalbeattie, Mabie Forest and Ae forest.

Need to hire a bike? Kirkowan Cycles, Newton Stewart caters for all ages and styles of cycling and even electric bikes. Also offer route advice. The Breakpad Bike shop is based at Kirroughtree Visitor Centre and offers bike hire and repair. If you bring your own bikes they can be safely stored under cover next to the Granary.

Our Beaches

The Machars has many beautiful sandy beaches to explore. Garlieston and Rigg Bay where the mulberry harbours were developed during WW2, Monreith with its connection to Gavin Maxwell. Slightly further afield The Rhinns of Galloway with the Mull of Galloway at its southern tip has many beautiful and quiet beaches.

Stargazing

Situated on the edge of the Galloway Dark Sky Park the view of the night sky on clear nights are stunning. You can visit the nearby 300 square miles of forest and hills in the Dark Sky Park for a breathtaking experience or simply enjoy this view, taken in 2017, from the Granary garden.

The Mull of Galloway

The Mull of Galloway, the southernmost tip of Scotland is well worth a visit. Spectacular views across to Northern Ireland (on a clear day!), lighthouse, dramatic cliff scenery, seabirds and a very good cafe that overlooks the sea.

Horse Riding

For those who need an equestrian fix, there are several riding and trekking centres locally. Three Lochs Trekking Centre, Three Lochs Holiday Park, Newton Stewart Gallowhill Riding Centre, Newton Stewart Golden Sands Trekking, Sandhead, Stranraer.
